In the face of recent tragic events - our fallen officers here in Rapid City, the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of soldiers - we have all been dealt a blow that has left us reeling. Overcome with sorrow and grief, the mourning of our heroes has been a wake-up call. One that has prompted a range of emotions - from anger and hate to sadness and love. Each of us deals with grief in different ways, and we've been fortunate enough to watch our community come together to support one another. We've risen to stand behind the men and women in blue who watch over our city, and I know I'm not the only citizen fighting the urge to hug every cop I see. I'm heart-broken to realize that even our small city isn't immune to the hatred and violence that poisons the world, but I'm proud to see the community response to an event that has truly rocked our little world.

As with many tragedies, this one has served as a reality check for many of us. Another reminder of how fragile life can be, how unexpected its twists and turns. As I reflect on my own life and those around me, here are some thoughts I'd like to share with you. I know I'm re-evaluating some of my own choices and decisions, clearing out the negative and turning fully toward a full, positive, loving existence.
